Magazine Advertisement

It is now at the stage where I must decide which music magazine I believe would be best fitted to my artist. In order to decide which magazine would be the most appropriate I need to conduct research into existing music magazines out there, and then make a decision on what magazine would be likely to publish an advertisement of my artist.

In order to gain an insight into the music magazine industry we had to conduct some research into magazines that we were already aware of, and then research other music magazines that are currently in retail at the moment. By doing this task we could widen our knowledge of the magazine industry and it would help us to make a decision on what magazine would fit the genre of music that I am creating a video for.

In the diagram above, it shows the research into the magazine industry. The music magazines in black are the magazines that I was aware of before conducting extra research into the market. The magazines in purple were the magazines that I became aware of after conducting research. Above the mind map are some extra facts on the impacts on the music industry.

The purpose of this task was to gain an understanding of the condition of the music magazine industry. It was also to give us more ideas on what magazines share the same genre as my artist.

Researching Media Packs

The magazine I have to chosen to publish my advert in is 'MixMag'. MixMag is the leading magazine in the genre of dance music and targets a similar market to me. Below is the Media pack for MixMag which demonstrates the demographic and genre.

The screenshot above shows the demographic of the music magazine, the chart shows that the demographic of the magazine is predominantly male. This is the audience that I am targeting, due to this, I believe this will be a suitable magazine for me to publish my advertisement. The artists that are featured in the magazine are also of a similar genre to my artist.
Mixmag is a magazine which targets dance music, which is a similar genre to the artist I have chosen. Therefore, this would be a suitable magazine for me to publish my advertisement. The magazine is also the lead competitor in the dance music magazine industry and would therefore be the best possible magazine to publish my advertisement.
Due to the demographic of the magazine mainly being located in the UK, this is also the audience that I am targeting and feel again this would be appropriate. The artist's has mainly had his establishment in the UK, however he has made minimal gains in the US music industry which is also helpful due to the magazine having a considerate fan base in the US. The magazine also 21% of its male consumers in the age range of 18-24 which is the largest percentage for the magazine. This age range is also the age range I have chosen to target.

Existing Products
To gain an insight into what a professional existing product looked like, I looked through a number of different music magazines to see what advertisements were in there. This would help me to see what conventions I would need to include in my MMA, although some of these adverts may not feature them. This also shown me the importance of the conventions in influencing the advert and also how important it is for the advert to really appeal to the genre audience.
Researching Existing Products - Kings of Leon
It is important to conduct some research into existing products as this will allow me to get an idea on what existing products include in order to make my product look more professional. By gaining an insight into what a product requires I will be able to make my product look more appealing and that includes all the conventions of a magazine advertisement.

Through completing this research into this magazine advertisement, I understood what advertisements must include, but also how they differ from each other and all include a theme to them. The theme chosen is one which stimulates the overall plan and shapes the advertisement into the end product.

RESEARCH: KEY TERMS FOR THE CONVENTIONS OF MUSIC MAGAZINES
As I will be constructing a music magazine advertisement I thought it would be helpful to research some conventions for them as it would be useful to include these into my own product to make them look more professional.

Main cover line - Often an artists title or important text placed on the cover
Drop capitals - Larger pieces of text compared to the majority of text.
Banners - text which stands out due to it being placed on a image or colored background
House style - The style of the cover which makes it distinctive and unique towards other music magazines.
Strap lines - The smaller headline placed below or around the main title.
Sell lines - A piece of text to try and sell the magazine to its audience

Masthead - The name and logo of the magazine

RESEARCH: WHY ADVERTISEMENT IS IMPORTANT TO MUSIC MAGAZINES

Music magazine are a huge point of advertisement for brands such as Q, Kerrang and NME to get their product out to their audience. These brands tend to struggle to market their products through social networking and television due to many of their products being distributed into stores. I have been researching some of music brands and what has made them successful.

Existing Products - Inspiration

This is an advertisement that I feel that I could use when considering my advertisement. The text was something that I particularly liked as it is the thing which dominates the page which I feel could be a useful thing for me to do as well with the image only supporting the page as opposed to dominating. This would also be good as it would bring the attention to the artist as opposed to the way he looks or anything similar. This also gave me ideas of using an image that isn't the artist himself.

This was also an advert which I could use for inspiration. The aspect that caught my attention was the image. This gave me the idea of imprinting lyrics from the song onto the image of the artist if this was to be included. This would be good as it would keep a focus on the song as well as featuring the artist on the advert.
